Georgian wine has about 7 000 years history. Material evidence found by archeologists like grape stones are researched to be 7 000 years old. The great part of the world's competent experts believe, that Georgia is the wine homeland. The reasons of thinking that are archeological findings like ancient marani (a place for storing wine), qvevri (a huge clay can covered with ground used for filling with wine), gold, silver and bronze bowls.
Wine is often mentioned in Georgian tales and legends. One of them tells how the St. Nino baptized Georgian people carrying a vine cross bound by her own hair. That's why most architectural monuments and Christian wall paintings include vine motives. Wine is a part of Georgian culture, poetry and songs. It is associated with celebration, holidays, rituals and religion in Georgia.
There are about 4 000 vine species in the world, among which 500 types are the Georgian local ones. The most special Georgian vine species are Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Mtsvane, Tetra, Alexandrouli, Tsolikauri etc. Various methods developed through centuries are realized in producing table dry, naturally sweet, semi-sweet, dessert and sparkling wine types.
Most popular Georgian wines are the world-wide known Saperavi, Akhasheni, Vazisubani, Mukuzani, Khvanchkara, Kindzmarauli, Tsinandali. These currently popular Georgian wines appeared in the 20th century.
