Racha - Lechkhumi

Racha - lechkhumi is a region in northwestern Georgia. It is the most sparsely populated region in the country. Ambrolauri is the administrative centre of the region. The region boasts a diverse landscape of mountain forests and meadows. The low lands are covered with forests of beech trees at high altitudes, along with pine and spruce trees.

The neighbouring regions, Racha and Lechkhumi, offer dramatic scenery to impress a visitor with white peaks and high mountains, lush forests, white water rapids, pristine lakes, picturesque villages and architectural masterpieces. There are several health resorts with mineral and halting waters in the region. Most of Upper Racha is classified as a national park. Racha - Lechkhumi is known for its viticulture and excellent red wines. Other well developed sectors include bee keeping and cattle breeding, as well as the production of dairy products. Local crafts, especially carpentry with traditional decoration and symbolic engravings, are famous all over Georgia.

Red naturally semisweet wine made from Alexandrouli and Mujuretul grapes cultivated in the Khvanchkara vinegrowing region near the village Khvanchkara. The wine is pressed and fermented in a traditional way in kvevri (clay pot) or open oak vats. The wine has a dark ruby color, strong and harmonious bouquet and velvety taste with raspberry tones.

Local cuisine

Lobiani - "lobio" (bean in English), soup is made from locally grown red beans cooked in a clay pot with or without smoked ham and is a typical dish of the Racha region. Lobiani (or bean pie) holds a particular place in the local cuisine. They are made of a bread filled with mashed red beansLobiani are often served during festivals.

Sightsseeings

Nikortsminda - the Nikortsminda Crossed Domed Church of st. Nicholas the Miracle - Maker is located in Nikortsminda village. It is a masterpiece of stone carving and façade decorations. The interior frescos date back to the 16-17th centuries.

Barakoni - the Barakoni Church of St. Virgin is located in the village Tsesi. The Church was built in 1753. Of particular interest are stone engravings on the church's main façade.
